Sir John was a leading member and strong supported of the Royal Air Squadron and regularly flew cadets on the Royal Air Squadron Day and on Air Experience Flights. The sword is awarded annually to the cadet judged to be the Best in the CFF (RAF). Cadets, who will invariably be the senior in their section / contingent will have to demonstrate the highest level of commitment and involvement, will have made the most of all opportunities offered to them during their time in the CFF and will also be highly regarded in their school or college. Nominations are called for in November of each year.

Of those recommended by either their Contingent Commander or RAF Section Commander only the most competitive (10 in 2014) will be chosen for the final interview with Wing Commander CCF on the first quarter of the year. Results are made public in late March and the Sword is awarded at the Royal Air Squadron Day celebrations at the end of the Summer Term. The top 3 will attend the parade on the Royal Air Squadron day and be awarded a Geoffrey De Havilland Flying Foundation Medal for CCF achievement.
