Hedingham Castle

Date

April 2022

Sixteen members and guests – including three-month-old Freddie Joy who was born on the 8th of January – gathered at Stones Farm, home of Bear and Annette Gosling, mid-morning on Thursday 21st of April arriving by helicopter, fixed wing aeroplanes and cars, to a very warm welcome of coffee and biscuits. The weather could not have been more perfect in glorious sunshine and the Gosling airstrip and gardens looked absolutely immaculate. Shortly afterwards the party boarded a minibus to travel the short distance to Hedingham Castle, the ancestral home of The Lindsay family, descendants of the Earls of Oxford who built it.
This majestic castle stands in the heart of its ancient ramparts and mediaeval park which have evolved into beautifully landscaped gardens, and the castle itself is the finest example of a Norman Keep in the country. The party was taken around the castle and grounds by Jason and Demetra Lindsay following an enthralling talk about the history of the Castle delivered by Jason.

Jason and Demetra, with their family, live in a beautiful Georgian house in the grounds of the Castle where we were entertained to drinks and canapés before sitting down to a most delicious lunch in their delightful dining room. After lunch we enjoyed a walk around the lake in front of the house before returning to Stones Farm to depart home. Everyone attending agreed that it was a most fantastic visit to a stunning castle and grounds, and huge thanks were extended to Bear and Annette Gosling for their hospitality and for putting a very memorable day trip together.
